Comau Fjord, Saturday, February 11 - Saturday, February 18, 2023

Applications Deadline: 25 de January 2023

DESCRIPTION

Theoretical and practical training course in scientific diving at professional level, oriented to students and researchers in the areas of archeology, marine sciences, marine biology, oceanography, environmental engineering and geology, among others.

The course is developed under the standards established by the World Confederation of Underwater Activities "CMAS" for the level of Advanced Scientific Diver CASD. It is taught by the Center for Research and Development of Underwater Heritage "VALPOSUB", in conjunction with the San Ignacio del Huinay Foundation, through CMAS America Zone and the Scientific Committee FEDESUB-Chile, under the supervision of SDI Norma Corado, Director of the Scientific Committee of the World Confederation of Underwater Activities America Zone and Director of the Latin American Society of Scientific Diving.

With the approval of the course, the applicants will be able to obtain the CMAS Advanced Scientific Diver (CASD) license. This certification entitles them to lead research teams and manage underwater research programs, maintaining training and certification standards that allow the development of replicable research, ensuring that all scientific dives are conducted maximizing the protection of divers against injury, illness and/or accidents.

APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS

The course is open to divers, research scientists and scientists with proven experience in diving, who wish to develop underwater scientific activities in compliance with international standards.

The Comau Fjord will be used as a natural laboratory for the study of cold water corals and other species of interest, where the student will be introduced to the scientific diving protocols applied to these organisms, and will be assisted by an interdisciplinary team of researchers and scientific divers.

Specific objectives

- Apply theoretical and practical knowledge of underwater monitoring and recording techniques.

- Conduct scientific dive monitoring in cold water corals and other species of interest, located in the study areas of the scientific station of the San Ignacio del Huinay Foundation.

- Design and implement plans for prevention and management of professional diving accidents.

- Apply current AAMM regulations and international scientific diving standards for the planning and execution of scientific diving campaigns and activities.
